Vale Jeannie Little OAM

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our most valued authors, Jeannie Little. From her early life growing up in the Aboriginal community of Mapoon, to her schooling while living on Thursday Island, to her training to be a nurse, to her career in the public health field throughout Australia, Jeannie Little has been a legend. She was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her work in alcohol and other drugs prevention programs throughout Australia.

Jeannie’s memoir, Waanyi Away, which was published in two editions, outlines her own extraordinary life, as well as the story of her mother who was part of the Stolen Generation. Her mother came from the Waanyi country to the west of Doomadgee on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Recently, the Waanyi people have won the rights to their land.

Jeannie will be greatly missed by her husband Ian, her family and friends, and her many colleagues from her long and exemplary working career.
