The title, A well-worked Life, is so appropriate for Werner Steffen’s memoir. From very difficult beginnings in Germany during World War II, Werner created an amazing life. Starting as a ship’s boy on the Rhine River at the age of 13, Werner later worked with the United States Navy on the Rhine River, rising quickly to the rank of Civilian Captain, Werner then emigrated to Australia. Sadly, he was not able to work in the marine industry in Australia. Initially, he worked hard at three different jobs to make ends meet for his family. He studied at night to achieve his Leaving Certificate and then enrolled at university in Engineering. After graduating he worked in many jobs, including as Chief Engineer in Kenya for Union Carbide and also with Lucas Heights near Sydney.
His life changed when he met Christina, the love of his life. They eventually moved to Cairns in Far North Queensland where Christina worked as a surgeon at Cairns Hospital. Werner then began the third stage of his career by moving into building and investing in commercial real estate.
In his later years, Werner returned to Germany from time to time, meeting up with members of his family and investigating his roots. This included discovering his ancestors among the early aristocracy in Germany and meeting up again with members of his more immediate family.
