Noela McNamara has been writing poetry since she was a teenager, and after all these years she is not afraid to take on a new challenge. Her latest book, A Little Book of Tanka Verse, is a collection of tanka poems. The tanka was initially developed in Japan, but has become popular in other countries because of the challenge of writing something important and moving, within the confines of a specific structure. In English versions, the tanka poem has three lines containing seven, five and seven syllables respectively, followed by two lines each of seven syllables.
Tanka poems are written with the intention to elicit vivid images and reflections for the reader with regard to varying topics: emotions, seasons, nature, love, and sadness. The first three lines introduce the topic or concept, while the last two lines attempt to provide some sort of conclusion or solution to the topic. So, tanka poems can be very moving, and express deep thoughts and feelings related to the human condition.
Noela McNamara’s tanka poems express her concern about the many problems and issues confronting us in the rapidly changing world we live in, while at the same time offering hope that things will be better in the future.
