Bernie McCarthy’s memoir will be released early in 2025. Bernie shares his amazing life, which has taken him from growing up in a little town in Victoria, to working for 51 years in local government in Victoria, the Northern Territory and Queensland, to travelling to more than 80 countries. His life has definitely not been boring!
Bernie has always done things a little differently. Sometimes it has resulted in a bit of drama, such as being involved in a boat crash off Mornington Island, attacked in Cape Town by a knife-wielding youth, robbed in Budapest and Los Angeles, and evacuated by helicopter from Thursday Island to Cairns Hospital.
His local government jobs took him to many different locations, including three islands, a tourist resort and a number of Indigenous communities. He was awarded a Public Service Medal in recognition of his long career in local government.
In the 1970s Bernie and two mates did the “Kombi van” circuit of Europe and the United Kingdom, igniting his passion for overseas travel. His visits to more than 80 countries have included an overland tour from Kathmandu to London, four months’ camping in South America, travelling across the United States, and visiting the Baltic States and Scandinavia. Now retired and living in Cairns, Queensland, he plans to do more overseas trips.

I have had the privilege to have worked for Bernie McCarthy PSM in a local Government capacity and gained so much knowledge and guidance from Bernie.
I am incredibly excited to get my hands on Bernie’s much anticipated book to read of his adventures, resilience and experiences! I appreciate books that provide inspiration and intrigue, and Bernie’s book, Definitely Not A Boring Life will be a welcome addition to my library of other inspirational books!

I worked with Bernie at Aurukun. I am sure this will be an awesome read. There were many conversations about travel experiences and those wonderful photos! So glad to see the book on sale.
