In the unexplored waters off Irian Jaya, an oil rig is in danger of exploding as it uncontrollably spews out thousands of cubic metres of gas per hour. It is a disaster that has mysterious origins, as the two life-long friends, Matt Turner and Jack Ramsey, soon discover.
Matt and Jack have been hired by the oil drilling company that owns the oil rig to rescue the 100 people who are on board. From the helicopter taking them to the rig, the problem comes into view: clouds of gas enveloping the rig prevent the helicopter from landing on it. As Jack pilots the helicopter, Matt must find some way to get onto the stricken rig. However, the gas is not what it seems: it contains the deadly hydrogen sulphide gas, which is heavier than air.
With only minutes of breathing air left in his tank, Matt must reach the remote operating vehicle control cabin, if they are all to survive. Jack has no choice but to continue circling the rig from a distance until it is safe to land. After some unforeseen delays, Jack’s fuel situation deteriorates. With only a few minutes of fuel left, he must make a decision: land on the rig and possibly ignite the gas, or crash into the sea where the deadly hydrogen sulphide gas lies floating above the water.
