The launch of Bernie McCarthy’s memoir, “Definitely Not a Boring Life”, was held at the Barron River Hotel in Stratford on 5 February 2025. Bernie spent 51 years in local government, working in many different places, including three islands, a tourist resort and a number of Indigenous communities. Bernie also has a passion for overseas travel, and has visited more 80 countries.
The appreciative audience were treated to an overview of the book by Bernie and a Q&A session conducted by Graham Poon. This was followed by a short speech from the publisher, Dr Gloria Webb, who officially launched the book. A large number of books were sold during the socialising afterwards, with people reluctant to leave after such a great book launch.
Bernie was able to meet up with many of his former colleagues in local government, especially those from Aurukun Shire Council and people from Thursday Island. Sales so far have been very good, with a large number of books pre-ordered before release of the book.

Thoroughly enjoyed ‘Definitely Not A Boring Life’ and want the adventure tales to continue! Such a comfortable read. I’m truly amazed how Bernie was able to choose which journeys to take us on, when there must be thousands of stories still to tell. Such an inspirational collection, both in how Bernie grew up, worked and travelled, but also how he has experienced adventure in such a relatable context, all the while just taking it in his stride. I feel like I have the travel guide for the remainder of my life. Hope there’s another book coming.
