The launch of Susan Alley’s new book, Alley & Co: Mulgrave Valley 1877-1897, was held on 16 May 2026 at the Gordonvale Museum. The book details the history of the Alley family who were early settlers in the Mulgrave Valley, south of Cairns in far north Queensland. The book makes an important contribution to the history of this area, while also containing much valuable information about the settlement of Cairns from 1876 on. If you have checked the dates, you will have noticed that the publication of this book was timed to match the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Cairns.
This is the fourth of Susan’s books on various members of the Alley family. One of these, Battle of the Bar, about her great-grandfather, Lachlan McKinnon, is based around the dangerous sea entry to Ballina in New South Wales. This is the same Ballina Bar that recently claimed the lives of a yachtsman and two Marine Rescue volunteers who went to his aid.
