Vale Rob Ryan

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Rob Ryan last month. Rob Ryan was one of the first authors to publish a memoir with Jabiru Publishing, and we worked together for many years. One of the reasons for his selecting our company was his connection with the township of Jabiru in the Northern Territory. Rob’s memoir, Beats Working for a Living: My Life as a Geologist, recounts his many adventures in the Top End of Australia, identifying mineral deposits, including the uranium deposit near Jabiru.

Rob had a long and fruitful life, growing up in Kenya, studying at Oxford University where he obtained his degree in Geology, and migrating with his wife to Alice Springs as the Australian Government’s minerals geologist. He worked in various places in the Northern Territory, including a spell in Darwin when his home was almost destroyed by Cyclone Tracey. He later worked in Western Australia, the northern part of Queensland, and the Middle East. After his retirement, he moved with his wife and family to Atherton, in the Tablelands near Cairns, but he continued his connections with the Geology community.

Despite the excellence of his work and his success in his chosen field, Rob was always a gentleman who retained the important qualities of love for family, respect for friends and colleagues, and right conduct. As his editor and publisher, I found him very professional in his approach, an excellent writer with a good sense of humour, and a great pleasure to work with.
