Stephany Evans Steggall’s latest book, “The Politician and the Pedestrian”, has now been released.
The book is a fictionalised account of true events that had their beginnings on Jimbour Station, a property on the Darling Downs west of Brisbane during the late 19th century.
It begins with an account of two boys who were childhood friends. Joshua Thomas Bell was the son of the owner of Jimbour Station, while Sambo Combo was an Aboriginal boy who lived on the station. Joshua Bell goes on to be a successful and wealthy politician in the Queensland Parliament, while Sambo Combo, later known as Charlie Samuels, becomes a pedestrian. This was the term used to describe runners who participated in organised races to win prizes. In the 1880s, he became the fastest runner in the world.
Their two stories diverge, as societal changes in the young State of Queensland had adverse impacts on the Aboriginal people.
