New educational children’s book released

Gigi’s Butterfly Garden by Nicola Strange has now been released, just in time for Christmas. It would make the perfect gift for children, but it is also of interest for anyone interested in the life cycle of the Cairns Birdwing butterfly. The book is lovingly illustrated by whimsical images of the central character, Gigi. Is it a coincidence that Gigi looks somewhat similar to the author?

The book also contains the author’s own photographs showing the transformation from egg to caterpillar, from caterpillar to chrysalis, and from chrysalis to butterfly. Imagine the patience and persistence needed to capture the perfect sequence of images to show the whole life cycle of this beautiful butterfly.

An additional feature of the book is its strong message about the vine on which the butterfly lays its eggs. There is an imported vine that looks very similar to the correct one for the Cairns Birdwing. If the butterfly lays eggs on the imported, incorrect vine, the baby caterpillars die because the leaves are toxic to the little babies. The important message to gardeners is to plant the correct Cairns Birdwing butterfly vine, Aristolochia tagala.

This beautiful children’s educational book is available from the Jabiru Publishing Shop.
