Stephany Evans Steggall’s historical novel, “The Politician and the Pedestrian”, was largely set in Jimbour Station in Queensland, west of Brisbane, in the mid-19th century. It was very appropriate, then, for the launch to be held at Jimbour House, the beautiful mansion that the owner of Jimbour Station, Joshua Thomas Bell, built.
The story follows the lives of two young boys who grew up on Jimbour Station. Joshua Bell was one of them; the other was an Aboriginal boy, Sambo Combo, later called Charles Samuels. While Joshua Bell became a well-known Member of the new Queensland Parliament, Charles Samuels was a famous runner, called at the time a pedestrian, as pedestrianism was the name given at that time to competitive professional runners.
In the beautiful venue at Jimbour House near Dalby, the book launch was introduced by Melanie Waters, an Indigenous PhD candidate who is studying at the University of Southern Queensland. Stephany’s speech gave an account of her life in the local area, her interest in writing books about history, and her research into the amazing story of Joshua Bell and Sambo Combo.
The launch was attended by 40 people, nearly all of whom purchased a book. Congratulations, Stephanie, on the launch of your book, and best wishes for its continued success.
