The life cycle of a Cairns Birdwing butterfly is shown in this educational book using images taken by the author, Nicola Strange, during the stages of its transformation from an egg to a beautiful butterfly.

Follow Gigi as she watches the hungry caterpillar eat the special vine that she planted in her garden for her favourite butterflies. Then share with her the different stages as the caterpillar eventually turns into a butterfly.

This book can help parents teach children about growth, changes, patience, new life and the wonders of Nature.

Nicola Strange

Nicola Strange grew up in England. She travelled to Cairns in 1989 as a qualified nurse on a working holiday. She never returned home after falling in love with the tropical far north, its lifestyle, its people and its amazing flora and fauna.

She was inspired to write this book and share her photographs of the Cairns Birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera euphorionin). She wants to educate our future generations and encourage the planting of the correct native vine (Aristolochia tagala) which these large, beautiful butterflies depend on for their continued survival.

Her fascination with caterpillars transforming into beautiful butterflies began when her son gave her a Cairns Birdwing butterfly vine (Aristolochia tagala) on her birthday in 2022.
